In Her Own Words

On Patrick Bryant, and the Defamation Suit He Filed
Mace’s accusations against her former fiancé, Charleston entrepreneur Patrick Bryant, run from her February 10, 2025 House floor speech, to the Oversight hearing she chaired three months later, to her social-media posts and emails to his attorneys. Bryant categorically denies every allegation, and no criminal charges have been filed against him. The Speech or Debate Clause of the U.S. Constitution shields what a member of Congress says on the floor, a federal judge so held in a parallel suit by Brian Musgrave but courts have left open whether Mace’s statements made outside the chamber carry the same protection. Because truth is a defense to defamation, the statements below would be actionable only to the extent they are false, which is what Bryant alleges in the defamation claim he has filed against her. Every line is verbatim from a public source (C-SPAN, her own posted video, the GOP Oversight hearing video, X, NBC, or the emails Bryant published); statements that exist only in sealed filings, depositions, or private messages are omitted.

The repetitions a defamation claim can reach, since the Speech or Debate Clause does not extend beyond the chamber. Her two official statements below are on her own congressional press-release page.
The defamation suit
On November 6, 2025, Bryant filed a Third-Party Complaint against Mace in Berg v. Bryant (Charleston County Court of Common Pleas, No. 2025-CP-10-03124), pleading defamation, invasion of privacy, intentional infliction of emotional distress, conversion, and civil conspiracy. The complaint contends Mace’s accusations are false and that she “engaged in solely personal acts, for her own personal gain, without any relationship to her position as a United States Congresswoman.” Mace denies the allegations, has asserted the Speech or Debate Clause as a defense, and removed the case to federal court in early 2026. The matter is unadjudicated and ongoing.
