A sworn affidavit attributes a statement to Mace: 'I hacked into his [Patrick's] computer and phone'

A sworn affidavit by South Carolina journalist Ashleigh Messervy attests that at a private August 28, 2024 meeting, Rep. Nancy Mace, after explaining she 'used to be a programmer', told her: 'I hacked into his [Patrick's] computer and phone.'

A six-page sworn affidavit by South Carolina journalist Ashleigh Messervy appears in full on her page. At its center is a single sentence Messervy attests Rep. Nancy Mace said to her, in person, at a restaurant on Daniel Island on August 28, 2024:

"I hacked into his [Patrick's] computer and phone."

According to the affidavit, Mace prefaced the statement by explaining that she "used to be a 'programmer,'" and produced an envelope of photographs she said she had taken from Bryant's phone, flashing the images and "quickly" returning each to the envelope. Messervy, who dated Bryant before his relationship with Mace, swears Mace declined to name any alleged victim or witness who could corroborate the claims she made at the meeting.

In paragraphs that follow, Messervy attests that Mace said any evidence she had gathered had been turned over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and that of the photographs Mace showed her, "none of these women are identifiable in the photos." Messervy also reproduces text messages she says Mace sent her after the meeting, including what Messervy attests was Mace's reply when Messervy asked how she could be sure of the alleged rape allegations Messervy says Mace was making against Bryant, allegations that are unproven and that Bryant has categorically denied:

"Because they recorded it and I found the recordings … allegedly …"

Messervy states she gave an oral statement to SLED on November 13, 2024, and signed the affidavit under penalty of contempt before a South Carolina notary on June 30, 2025.

The allegations Mace describes in the affidavit are unproven and contested, and the matters remain the subject of ongoing civil litigation and a SLED investigation. Rep. Mace has denied wrongdoing and maintains her conduct was undertaken in her official capacity as a Member of Congress; the scope-of-employment question is contested and unadjudicated. Patrick Bryant has categorically denied the underlying claims. Nothing here is a finding of fact. One paragraph of the affidavit, concerning a minor child, has been redacted.
