“I don’t even want to be here”, six moments from the hearing she ran on her own lawsuit
A supercut from the House Oversight surveillance hearing Rep. Nancy Mace convened and chaired, a matter in which she is herself a party and key witness in related, ongoing civil litigation. From the chair she said she didn’t want to be there, named her litigation adversary, dared him to sue, pointed potential complainants to her congressional office, and gaveled the hearing closed.
On May 20, 2025, Rep. Nancy Mace convened and chaired a House Oversight subcommittee hearing she had titled “Breach of Trust: Surveillance in Private Spaces.” Reporting noted the unusual arrangement: she chaired a federal Oversight hearing on surveillance while she was herself a party and key witness in related, ongoing civil litigation on the same subject, an extraordinary use of a committee gavel for a personal legal matter.
This supercut stitches six verbatim moments from that hearing, each cut from the official committee livestream and captioned word-for-word:
- “I didn’t pick this fight. I don’t even want to be here today and discuss this.”, from the chair she convened.
- “Patrick Bryant has started the process of suing his victims, myself included.”, naming, from the dais, the man on the other side of her civil case.
- “Bring it on, brother, because there is no defamation in the truth.”, daring her legal adversary to sue.
- “My office has a tip line… for those who believe they may have been recorded, assaulted, or otherwise victimized by Patrick Bryant and any of his business partners.”, directing potential complainants to her congressional office.
- “I’m an elected official. I was elected when I was filmed here.”, invoking her office.
- “…and with that, I conclude this hearing today.”, gaveling the hearing closed.
The man Mace names denies the allegations she makes in this hearing; they are unproven and contested, the underlying civil litigation is ongoing, and no court has ruled on the merits. What the footage documents is a sitting congresswoman’s conduct from the chair, convening and chairing a federal hearing on a matter in which she is herself a party and key witness.
The footage is the official committee hearing livestream (a U.S. government record / public domain).

During the January 14, 2025 House Oversight Committee organizational meeting, Rep. Nancy Mace challenged Rep. Jasmine Crockett, "If you want to take it outside, we can do that", weeks after Mace had claimed an activist injured her arm with an aggressive handshake, a characterization critics disputed. The contrast spawned a round of memes pairing her challenge with images of full-body casts.
