"If you're running for two offices at once, you've already told us who you are": Nancy Mace objects to sitting House members seeking the Senate, without naming Russell Fry
Fifty-nine minutes after Rep. Russell Fry announced his campaign for the U.S. Senate on July 20, 2026, Rep. Nancy Mace posted a standalone statement on X, without naming Fry: 'If you're running for two offices at once, you've already told us who you are. That's not about politics anymore - that's about power.' She grounded the objection in House math, warning that a sitting Republican House member who wins the Senate seat in November vacates his seat until next May, narrowing an already thin majority, and writing 'I will never hand Hakeem Jeffries that gift.' The post is a written note, not a reply and not a quote-tweet of Fry's announcement, and it carries no attached photo or video.
The timing
Fry (@RussellFrySC) posted his own Senate announcement at 8:01 a.m. ET the same morning, cataloged in Maceopedia's dispatch on his entry. Mace's post followed at 9:00 a.m. ET, 59 minutes later. It does not use his name, his handle, or a quote-tweet link to his post. Rep. Ralph Norman (SC-5), the other sitting House member who has declared for the seat, entered the race two days earlier, on July 18.
The math she cites
Mace's argument turns on what she says happens to a U.S. House seat when its occupant wins a Senate race. In her account, a sitting House member who wins the South Carolina Senate seat in November "vacates his Republican House seat until next May," leaving it empty in the interim. Maceopedia has not independently verified that timeline; it is her characterization. With Republicans holding a narrow U.S. House majority, she frames one fewer seated Republican member as a risk to the Speaker's gavel, and names the stake directly: "I will never hand Hakeem Jeffries that gift." Both Fry (SC-7) and Norman (SC-5) currently hold House seats and would be subject to this dynamic if either wins the Senate race in November.
Where Mace herself stands
Mace is not a candidate for reelection to her own House seat and is not on the November 2026 ballot. She ran for governor rather than for reelection to SC-1, and lost the June 9, 2026 Republican gubernatorial primary, finishing fifth with 12.2 percent. Asked by the Post and Courier what came next, she said, "my time is up at the end of this year," and, asked what she would do, "Back to the private sector." Her House term ends in January 2027.
Mace has not declared for the Senate seat herself. On July 12, the day after Graham's death, she posted a five-second clip of the "just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in" line from The Godfather Part III, and told CBS she would "be remiss" not to "at least consider" a bid. Filing has not opened for anyone. Candidate filing for the special Republican primary opens at noon Tuesday, July 21, and closes at noon Tuesday, July 28. None of the four declared Republican candidates, Mark Lynch, Duke Buckner, Norman, and Fry, has filed yet. The special primary is August 11, a runoff if needed is August 25, and the general election is November 3 against Democrat Annie Andrews.
On whether a candidate may appear on a general election ballot for two offices at once, the South Carolina Election Commission said on July 15, 2026 that "candidates have appeared on general election ballots for more than one office in previous South Carolina elections." The commission expressly declined to "address or comment on hypothetical or specific scenarios or opine on the qualifications of potential candidates," and did not rule on Fry's or Norman's situation, or on any other candidate, specifically.
