On CNN's election-night board, anchors can't find Mace, John King places her 'at the bottom of the pack' as she finishes last in the GOP governor's primary

During CNN's June 9, 2026 coverage of the South Carolina Republican gubernatorial primary, anchor Kaitlan Collins and data analyst John King could not initially locate Nancy Mace among the leading candidates on the results board. King scrolled to the bottom of the field to find her, calling Mace 'at the bottom of the pack.' Pamela Evette and Alan Wilson advanced to a June 23 runoff; Mace finished near the bottom of the major Republican field.

WASHINGTON, DC - OCTOBER 11: U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) speaks to reporters after the House Republicans nominated House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) to be their candidate for Speaker of the House, at the U.S. Capitol on October 11, 2023 in Washington, DC. Despite winning a majority of Republican support to run for Speaker, members of his party have changed their support putting Scalise's run for Speaker on uncertain terms. The full House of Representatives is expected to vote on the next Speaker of the House shortly after McCarthy was voted out of his leadership position last week. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

On the night of June 9, 2026, as returns came in from South Carolina's Republican gubernatorial primary, CNN turned to the governor's race, and, on air, its anchors could not immediately find Nancy Mace on the results board. Mace had entered the contest as an early front-runner; by election night she was nowhere near the top of the displayed field.

Reporting credit: This moment was first reported by The Daily Beast, Olivia Ralph, "Nancy Mace Hit With Total Embarrassment During CNN Segment" (June 10, 2026). The Daily Beast's article and its screen grabs of CNN's coverage are the source for the on-air exchange quoted below.

As reported by The Daily Beast, anchor Kaitlan Collins looked at the leaders and said she could not see Mace among them:

"We're looking at those top three people. I don't see Nancy Mace's name on that list.", Kaitlan Collins, CNN

Data analyst John King then scrolled down the board to locate her, past other candidates, before placing her at the bottom:

"You've got to come way down here below the businessman Rom Reddy.", John King, CNN

"Nancy Mace… the congresswoman, Trump foe, at the bottom of the pack.", John King, CNN

The returns reflected a wide loss. Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and state Attorney General Alan Wilson led the Republican field and advanced to a June 23 runoff, with neither winning a majority outright. Mace finished near the bottom of the major candidates; The Daily Beast reported her at roughly 11.6 percent and in fifth place with about two-thirds of ballots counted. Former President Donald Trump had endorsed Evette over Mace on May 29, 2026.

Mace conceded the race on X, framing the defeat as a chapter rather than an ending:

"Serving South Carolina has been the greatest honor of my life. This isn't the end of the fight. It's just the end of this chapter.", Nancy Mace, on X
