We want someone 'sane': Trump insiders fume as Nancy Mace floats run for Senate seat
AlterNet reports that after Sen. Lindsey Graham's death, the Trump White House moved to keep Nancy Mace away from his Senate seat, with one Trump official telling Axios they would 'drop $2 million on her head' if she reached a runoff because 'all we want is a Republican who is sane.' Trump recommended Graham's sister, Darline Graham Nordone, for the interim appointment, while Mace told Axios she was being unfairly singled out since two men had announced within hours of Graham's passing and she had not.

The piece leads with the Trump side of the succession fight: the White House does not want Mace anywhere near the seat, and its people were willing to put a number on it.
"If Mace ends up in a runoff, we'll drop $2 million on her head to keep her out. All we want is a Republican who is sane and can work with the White House."
Trump administration official to Axios, as quoted by AlterNet, July 13, 2026
A second anonymous Trump official went at the timing of Mace's self-promotion:
"POTUS wasn't a fan already, but putting herself out as a candidate while everyone was absorbing the news of Lindsey's death was in poor taste, even for Mace."
Trump administration official to Axios, as quoted by AlterNet, July 13, 2026
Per the report, Trump recommended Graham's sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to Gov. Henry McMaster for the interim appointment. Other Republicans, including Rep. Joe Wilson and Mark Lynch, signaled interest immediately after Graham's death.
Mace's counter, given to Axios and carried by AlterNet, was that she had not announced anything and was being held to a different standard:
"Two men announced they were running to replace Lindsey Graham yesterday, within hours of his passing. I wasn't one of them. The pearl clutching by people afraid I will run hit a new high."
Nancy Mace to Axios, as quoted by AlterNet, July 13, 2026
The "sane" line lands in a specific context: this is the Trump operation, speaking anonymously but on purpose, framing its own party's congresswoman as the unstable option one month after she blamed her fifth-place governor-primary finish on losing Trump's support over her Epstein files vote.

On NewsNation's CUOMO, two days after Lindsey Graham's death opened a U.S. Senate seat, Nancy Mace said Trump's opposition following her Epstein-files break "may have ended my political career," conceded "I got my butt beat in the governor's race," and, in an answer nominally about ICE, argued that endorsements "do matter, especially in South Carolina." Chris Cuomo urged her on air to run in the special election.
