Mace Says Sharia Runs Michigan. Michigan's Governor Is Gretchen Whitmer.

On the September 21 episode of her 'Get Maced' podcast, Rep. Nancy Mace told her audience that 'Sharia law is running Michigan,' and she said it inside a sentence accusing other people of 'lying about America.' The claim is false. Michigan runs on the U.S. Constitution and a state constitution, the same as South Carolina. Its governor is Gretchen Whitmer. Fact-checkers have debunked the Michigan-sharia myth since 2015, and Girl Scouts of the USA says on the record that it teaches no religion and welcomes girls of every faith.

Mace Says Sharia Runs Michigan. Michigan's Governor Is Gretchen Whitmer.

"Sharia law is running Michigan and is lying about America."

Rep. Nancy Mace, on her "Get Maced" podcast, September 21, 2026 [25:49].

Michigan is a U.S. state of about 10 million people. It is governed by the U.S. Constitution and the Michigan Constitution of 1963, the same framework that governs South Carolina. Its governor is Gretchen Whitmer. On September 21, a sitting member of Congress told her audience that "Sharia law is running Michigan," and she did it inside a sentence accusing other people of "lying about America."

This is a fact-check, and the claim is false. The tell is built into the same breath: Mace asked her listeners to "be honest about what's happening," then described a version of America that does not exist.

What she said

Earlier in the same episode, Mace framed the segment [03:48]:

"I don't hate all Muslims, okay. I loathe and I detest and I'm terrified as a woman of radical Islam."

She returned to it near the end of the show. Here are her words, in order, from the source recording:

[25:05]

"the hijab is oppression, it's oppressive of women, and we're putting women in hijabs, girls in hijabs and the Girl Scouts. What are we even talking about anymore? I don't understand it."

[25:24]

"the idea that Sharia law doesn't exist anywhere, that is a lie. Don't let your Muslim neighbor tell you that, because it's not true."

[25:45]

"I want people to be honest about what's happening, lying about the world, when Sharia law is running Michigan and is lying about America."

The Record

  • Michigan runs on U.S. law and a state constitution. Michigan is governed by the U.S. Constitution and the Michigan Constitution of 1963, the same legal framework as South Carolina. Michigan's governor is Gretchen Whitmer. No sharia law is "running" the state, its courts, or its schools.
  • The Michigan-sharia claim is an old myth, and it has been fact-checked to the ground. The story has circulated online for a decade. PolitiFact has knocked down versions of the Michigan-sharia claim since 2015. Dearborn, the Michigan city with one of the largest Arab-American communities in the country, is a normal American city under normal American law (Encyclopaedia Britannica), not a theocracy.
  • Girl Scouts of the USA, on the record: "Girl Scouts is not a religious organization and does not teach religion... we've welcomed girls of every faith." A girl who wears a hijab is practicing her own family's faith. That is the First Amendment working, not a foreign legal code taking over the troop.

The point

Mace's segment was an argument that other people are "lying about America." She closed it by telling her audience a thing about America that is not true. The target here is that one false statement by a powerful elected official, made on the record, to a large audience. It is not Muslim Americans, and it is not anyone's faith. Michigan runs on U.S. law. Its governor is Gretchen Whitmer. Readers can watch the clip and check the record for themselves.
