The day, in her own words
On CBS News, Sunday morning, she opened in mourning:
"We're stunned. Nobody thought this could happen anytime soon."
"He was funny. He was hard. He was smart, brilliant."
At 9:43 AM ET, she posted this to X, a line from The Godfather:
"Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in..."

Under South Carolina law, Gov. Henry McMaster names an interim senator to serve until the seat is filled by special election; Mace said Sunday she had heard the likely interim pick is Rep. Joe Wilson. Candidate filing for the special primary closes July 21, with the primary expected around August 11 and the general election in November. President Trump, asked on NBC's "Meet the Press," said he already has a preferred successor in mind but declined to name one. As of this writing Mace has not announced, and no court, agency, or party has settled the field.
