"Which version of Nancy Mace will we get?": a nonbinary creator turns Mace's Senate flirtation into a software-update bit
On July 19, 2026, the YouTube and TikTok creator who posts as @defenestrans published an 85-second Short arguing that Nancy Mace's politics track her audience rather than her convictions, staged as a running joke about software updates. 'Nancy Mace has successfully upgraded to MAGA 5.0,' the host says, before running through 'Factory settings Nancy, District 1 Nancy, Governor's race Nancy, Senate DLC Nancy' and closing: 'I think she just has auto update on, and somehow every new version has more bugs than the last.' Two factual claims in the clip check out: Mace finished fifth in the June 9 Republican gubernatorial primary with 12.1 percent, and she has said on the record she will look at Lindsey Graham's Senate seat. The characterizations are the creator's own; Mace has not responded to the video.
UPDATE, July 20, 2026: she answered the question. Mace is not running. One day after this video posted, Nancy Mace announced she will not enter the special election for the late Lindsey Graham's Senate seat. In her own words: "I'm not running for the Senate, because I have some unfinished business. Since I stood on that House floor, I've been fighting for every woman and girl who was told to stay silent. I want justice, and that day is coming." The announcement came three days after President Trump endorsed Graham's sister, Sen. Darline Graham Nordone, for the full term. Combined with her June decision not to seek re-election to the House, Mace is now set to leave public office when her term ends in January 2027. Reported by Fox Carolina, Newsweek, and WSLS. She said separately, in a video posted with that statement, "I'm not chasing another title, I'm chasing justice." The bit
The video is 85 seconds long, shot vertically on a phone in a bedroom, with the host speaking into a podcast microphone that carries a transgender pride flag windscreen. It opens on the news peg and never leaves it:
"Nancy Mace is reportedly thinking about running for Lindsey Graham's Senate seat in South Carolina, and honestly I just have one question. Which Nancy Mace will be running?"
From there the whole piece runs on one sustained metaphor: that Mace's politics install like software releases, each one shipped to match whoever is watching. The creator dates the first update to Mace's district being redrawn:
"Because the Nancy Mace who first got into Congress wasn't exactly marching in Pride parades, but she also wasn't making trans people her full-time hobby. But then her district got redrawn to include a lot more MAGA Republicans, and it was like she installed a software update. Nancy Mace has successfully upgraded to MAGA 5.0."
The sharpest line in the clip is the one that states the thesis directly:
"Funny how her convictions changed at exactly the same time as her audience."
Then the statewide race, framed as a failed install:
"Then she forgot to upgrade the program when she went stateside in South Carolina's governor's race, and Republican voters handed her a fifth place finish. Turns out the statewide version had some compatibility issues."
And the close, which is the video's most quoted moment in its own comments:

Turns out the statewide version had some compatibility issues. So now she's reportedly looking at another statewide race, which means we're probably due for another update. So which Nancy Mace are we getting this time? Factory settings Nancy? District 1 Nancy? Governor's race Nancy? Senate DLC Nancy? The line about a camera "within 50 feet" and remarks "full of slurs usually to boot" is the creator's characterization of Mace's record. Maceopedia does not adopt it. Mace's own statements on transgender issues are cataloged separately, in her words and with dates, at Transgender politics.
What checks out
Two hard factual claims sit inside the joke, and both hold up.
The fifth-place finish is accurate. Mace ran in the South Carolina Republican gubernatorial primary on June 9, 2026 and finished fifth of five major candidates with 57,380 votes, or 12.1 percent, failing to reach the June 23 runoff. Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette led with 28.9 percent and Attorney General Alan Wilson took 26.2 percent, with Ralph Norman third at 17.1 percent and Rom Reddy fourth at 14.2 percent. The Senate interest is on the record, from Mace herself. It is not anonymous sourcing. On Fox News on July 12, 2026, Mace said:
"I'm never gonna shut the door. I love the state of South Carolina. You only live once, and you know, if the people of South Carolina would like me to serve in that capacity, I'll certainly take a look at it."
Her fuller answer moved several times across a single Sunday of interviews, cataloged in Mace's shifting answer on the Graham seat.
What the video leaves out
The clip compresses a fast-moving story into 85 seconds, and in doing so it skips the context that makes the seat vacant at all and the developments that have narrowed Mace's path.
Graham did not lose a seat, he died. Sen. Lindsey Graham won the June 9, 2026 Republican Senate primary with 56.8 percent, then died suddenly on the night of July 11, 2026 at age 71. Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Graham's sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to hold the seat on an interim basis. The vacancy is the reason anyone is discussing a run. Framing it as Mace eyeing "Lindsey Graham's Senate seat" is accurate, but a listener who missed the news would not learn from the video that this is a special election following a death.
Trump had already endorsed against her, two days before the video posted. On July 17, 2026, President Trump endorsed Nordone for the full six-year term, writing that he asked her "for the Good of our Nation, to run for the U.S. Senate in the Special Republican Primary on Tuesday, August 11, 2026." The public polling already had her at 10 percent. An Emerson College poll for Nexstar, fielded July 14 to 15, put Mace at 10 percent, tied for third. See First poll after Graham's death puts Mace at 10 percent.
The decision window closed quickly. Candidate filing for the special primary opened at noon on July 21, 2026 and closes at noon on July 28, 2026, with the primary on August 11, 2026. As of the reporting available when this video posted, dated July 18, Mace and Rep. Ralph Norman were both still described as considering bids. On July 20 Mace ruled it out (see the update at the top).
Who made it
The video comes from @defenestrans, a small channel whose handle is a play on "defenestrate." The account's own YouTube bio reads: "nonbinary femme, 2SLGBTQIA+ advocate, illustrator, graphic designer." In the channel's own earlier uploads the host is addressed and self-identifies on camera as Lainey, and publishes a Substack newsletter under their own byline. They describe themself across their linked accounts as a veteran, artist and activist, and as a co-founder of rememberyouroath.org.
The channel is not a podcast, despite the microphone and the format. There is no audio feed on any podcast platform; the linked Substack is a text newsletter, and the video output is short-form commentary posted to YouTube and TikTok.

The image on that card, reproduced at the top of this page, shows Nancy Mace holding open a jacket to reveal a bright pink "TRANS RIGHTS" shirt.
It is not a real photograph of Mace. It is a composite, and the video presents it as one: the background carries the channel's own neon show branding rather than any venue Mace was photographed in. Mace has never worn that shirt and has never expressed the position it carries. Her public record on transgender legislation is the opposite of the image's message, which is precisely the joke the card is making, and it is the same joke the video's script makes for 85 seconds about a politician whose positions the creator says track her audience.
