The McBride bathroom bill (Nov. 2024)

In November 2024, before Rep.-elect Sarah McBride (D-DE) was sworn in as the first openly transgender person elected to Congress, Rep. Mace introduced a House resolution to bar transgender women from using women's restrooms at the U.S. Capitol. Mace framed the measure explicitly as targeting McBride. On social media she wrote: "McBride, a biological male, does not get a say in women's private spaces."

At a November 19, 2024 press event introducing the resolution, Mace declared: "This is the last war on women and I aim to stop it." She told reporter Pablo Manríquez: "Sarah McBride doesn't get a say in this. If you're a biological man, you shouldn't be in women's restrooms." When asked directly whether the resolution targeted McBride, Mace said: "Yes and absolutely, and then some." Democrats described the measure as "just plain bullying."

Mace also invoked her personal history as a rape and domestic-abuse survivor to justify the measure, saying: "I'm a victim of abuse myself. I'm a rape survivor. I have PTSD from the abuse I've suffered at the hands of a man … I'm absolutely 100% going to stand in the way of any man who wants to be in a women's restroom."

In a separate social-media post, Mace wrote: "We don't care if you're trans, if you have balls we don't want you in the women's bathroom." Speaker Mike Johnson issued a directive consistent with the resolution's terms in January 2025.
