On CNN with anchor Kaitlan Collins on October 5, 2023, two days after voting to oust McCarthy, Mace said:
"I have not been fundraising off of this every step of the way. I made my decision last night. I made the decision to fundraise over the last 24 hours because of the threats that I have received over fundraising and money drying up, which is why I need help."
Collins confronted Mace with her own January 2023 clip calling Matt Gaetz "a fraud" for "sending out a fundraising email every time he voted against Kevin McCarthy." Reporters had documented Mace's fundraising appeal going out within one hour of McCarthy's October 3 ouster — contradicting her "last night" claim.
