Nancy Mace breaks with Trump on his $5,000 "dividend" check
Donald Trump promised a $5,000 "Trump dividend" if Republicans win the midterms. Ted Cruz narrowed it to working Americans. Rep. Nancy Mace went further and told her own voters the promise is not real: "No one is getting a $5k check."
At the Republican National Midterm Convention in Dallas, Donald Trump promised the crowd a payout for a November win: "So if the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000. It will be called the Trump dividend." The money, his team said, would come out of tariff revenue.

His own party started qualifying it almost at once. On Fox News, Sen. Ted Cruz said he liked the idea only "as a tax refund," and drew a line on who should receive it: "I don't think we should be paying people that are not working, particularly those that are physically able to work, but choosing not to."

Then Rep. Nancy Mace went further than any of them. Replying on X, she skipped the hedging and contradicted the President outright: "No one is getting a $5k check."
The math is on her side. Sending $5,000 to every American would cost roughly $1.2 trillion, while tariff revenue is currently running under $200 billion a year. The promise and the money are nowhere close.
