His Ex-Wife of 20 Years: 'He Was Never Abusive in Any Way to Me, Not Physically, Emotionally, Nor Verbally'

Nancy Mace has repeatedly claimed, including on the House floor under what Beth Johnston calls "her alleged congressional immunity," that she was abused by an ex-boyfriend. The allegations are widely understood to refer to Patrick Bryant, Mace's former fiance. Bryant has categorically denied all allegations. The litigation is ongoing.
Now the person closest to Patrick Bryant's character for two decades has spoken: his ex-wife of 20 years, Beth Johnston (formerly Beth Bryant).
December 6, 2024: The Private Statement
Johnston submitted a formal character statement on December 6, 2024, to counsel in the Mace v. Bryant matter:
Beth Johnston character statement, December 6, 2024.
Her words, verbatim:
"As Patrick's ex-wife and after being together for over 25 years, I say with confidence he is not an abuser. He was never abusive in any way to me, not physically, emotionally, nor verbally. I 100% do not believe Nancy Mace's 'abuser' is Patrick Bryant. Without anything to substantiate her comments, I worry all of this may only be a way for her to gain media attention."
February 17, 2025: The Public Statement
After Mace repeated her abuse allegations on the House floor, Johnston went public. Patrick Bryant shared her Facebook statement on March 8, 2025. Johnston's statement covered not only Bryant but also Brian Musgrave, a co-defendant in Mace's lawsuit and, as Johnston noted, the best man at their wedding:
"As a constituent in Nancy Mace's congressional district, I am appalled by her outrageous misuse of the House floor to spread lies about my ex-husband and longtime friend. Patrick Bryant and I were married for 20 years and we have two wonderful sons. Brian Musgrave was the best man at our wedding. I firmly believe Nancy's allegations against both men are entirely baseless. Nancy claims she wants to protect women and children, yet she showed no concern for ours when she was spouting lies under her alleged congressional immunity. In my twenty years of being married to Patrick, I never experienced any abuse or behavior that Nancy Mace alleges. I have also had a longtime friendship with Brian Musgrave. Her statements do not reflect the integrity of the men I know, and have known for the majority of my life. It's clear Nancy only cares about advancing her political career no matter the cost."

Who Is Beth Johnston?
Beth Johnston (formerly Beth Bryant) holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm.D., BCPS) and works as a Clinical Pharmacist and Assistant Editor at TRC Healthcare. She and Patrick Bryant were together for over 25 years and married for 20. They have two sons together. Brian Musgrave, whom she identifies as a longtime personal friend, was the best man at their wedding. Johnston is identified as a potential fact witness in the Mace v. Bryant case.
Her comments on Patrick Bryant's public social media posts following Mace's allegations included the hashtag "#nevernancy."
Context
Patrick Bryant and Brian Musgrave deny all allegations made by Nancy Mace. The litigation is ongoing; none of the allegations have been adjudicated. Beth Johnston's statements represent her personal opinions and observations from her years of direct knowledge of both men.

October 15, 2026 · DispatchHow the Epstein Files Ended Her Political Career
Rep. Nancy Mace says the Epstein files cost her a political career. She said it on NewsNation on July 13, 2026, in an interview with Tara Palmeri published August 30, and on Jubilee on September 6. This documentary sets that account beside the record: the 2025 discharge petition she signed, her walkout from the September 2, 2025 meeting with survivors and her post about it, the president's posts, the 427 to 1 vote, her praise of the president in 2026, the May 29 endorsement of a rival, her fifth place finish in the June 9 primary, and what she said after. The president's endorsement post names neither Mace nor the Epstein files. The link between the two is her account.
October 2, 2026 · Dispatch'An Easy No': Mace Cheers Trump for Rejecting Iran's Offer, Five Days After Her Own Plan Said 'Take the Meeting'
On the September 30, 2026 episode of her Get Maced podcast, Nancy Mace called President Trump's rejection of Iran's cease-fire offer 'an easy no.' As she described the offer, Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week if the United States lifted its naval blockade and returned Iran's frozen assets. Five days earlier, on September 25, step two of Mace's own seven-step plan to end the Iran war was 'take the meeting, the president should meet with Iran's president.' In her own words, readers can line the two up: a plan built on engaging Iran, and a thumbs-up for turning Iran's opening offer down flat. She also put the frozen-asset figure at '$24 billion'; public reporting on the same offer put it at roughly $12 billion.

On her 'Get MACED' podcast, Rep. Nancy Mace lifted her shirt and showed off her newest tattoo: a color rose across her left ribcage, and above it a two-line script that spells out both of her children's full names and their exact dates of birth. It is the 15th tattoo Maceopedia has now cataloged, and it identifies a piece the record had only listed as an 'unknown' side inscription. Mace, who has built a public brand on child safety and on a parent's right to protect a child's privacy, chose to make her kids' names and birthdays a permanent, on-camera display. Maceopedia has redacted the birthdates in the image below.
September 25, 2026 · DispatchMace Wants a Public Execution, Then Calls Juror Criticism a 'Lynching'
On September 14, 2026, Nancy Mace told TMZ she wanted Lindsay Clancy 'publicly executed' as a 'warning to women everywhere.' About a week later, on the September 23 episode of her podcast Get Maced, Mace called criticism of the holdout juror in that same case 'a modern day lynching' and claimed Democrats founded the KKK. The Klan was founded in Pulaski, Tennessee in 1865 by former Confederate veterans.
