61 state leaders sign letter in support of Charleston International Airport following Rep. Mace incident
Lee Williams ·
ABC Columbia reported that 61 state and local officials, including state senators, house representatives, mayors, county supervisors, sheriffs, and school board members, signed a letter defending Charleston International Airport personnel after Rep. Mace's October 30 incident and announced legal action. The letter called the airport a vital economic engine for the region.

ABC Columbia's count of 61 signatories was higher than the "over 50" figure reported simultaneously by other outlets, reflecting ongoing additions to the letter as it circulated. Signatories spanned the Charleston area and surrounding counties. Mace disputed the underlying incident reports and announced plans to sue for defamation the same day the letter was released.
"As leaders committed to the well-being, reputation and continued success of the Lowcountry and all of South Carolina, we write in support of the professional men and women who serve our community through Charleston International Airport."
